A martial arts teacher agrees to teach karate to a violent teenager.

Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and Elizabeth Schue Daniel and his mother move from New Jersey to California. He has a great new job, but Daniel quickly discovers that the dark-haired Italian boy with an emphasis on Jersey doesn’t fit into the blonde surfer crowd. Daniel manages to understand some of the struggles, but in the end several people belonging to the same school of karate are cornered. When Daniel loses consciousness, seeing Miyagi, the elderly gardener throws himself into a fight and saves him, defeating half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Daniel soon discover the real motivator for child abuse in the form of their karate teacher. Miyagi promises to teach Daniel karate and organizes a fighting tournament across the valley. When he starts training, Daniel doesn’t understand what is being shown to him. Miyagi seems to be more interested in Daniel painting fences and wax machines than teaching him karate.
Daniel accompanies his mentor, Mr. Miyagi, to the Miyagi Orphanage in Okinawa. Miyagi visits his dying father and confronts his old rival, while Daniel falls in love and inadvertently becomes a new rival.

Upon arrival, Mr. Miyagi discovers that he still feels old love. This causes problems with the old rival, whom he first left Okinawa to avoid. Meanwhile, Daniel is facing a new love and is also making enemies.
