Grand Theft Auto V is a 2013 action game developed by Rockstar North and released by Rockstar Games. It is the first major entry in the Grand Theft Auto series since the release of 2008 Grand Theft Auto IV. In the fictional state of San Andreas, Southern California, a player watches the story of three criminals and their attempts to create them, while they are pressured by government agents and powerful criminals. The open world design allows players to move freely through the open countryside of San Andreas and Sant Santos, Los Angeles.
The game is played from a third and first person perspective, and the world is navigated on foot or by vehicle. The player controls the three main characters between one player and switches between them during and outside the mission. The story focuses on complex sequences, and multiple tasks including shooting and fun. The “desirable” system governs law enforcement aggression against players who commit crimes. With the online game Grand Theft Auto Online, up to 30 players can participate in various co-op and competitive game modes.
Game development began shortly after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV and was shared by many Rockstar studios around the world. The development team used influence from many of their previous projects, including Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3, and redesigned the game around the three protagonists to restructure the infrastructure of its predecessor.
