Traqué par les habitants de l’hôtel Overlook où il a passé une horrible année d’enfance, Dan est à la dérive depuis des décennies, désespéré de se débarrasser de l’héritage de désespoir, d’alcoolisme et de violence de son père. Finalement, il s’installe dans une ville du New Hampshire, une communauté AA soutenante, et un emploi dans une maison de retraite où son pouvoir «lumineux» restant fournit le confort crucial final pour les mourants. Avec l’aide d’un chat prophétique, il devient “Doctor Sleep”. Puis Dan rencontre la pierre évanescente Abra, et c’est son cadeau spectaculaire, la lueur la plus brillante jamais vue, qui ravive les propres démons de Dan et l’invoque dans une bataille pour Abra.
